Position Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs clerical functions related to ongoing department operations and the coordination of interdepartmental andintradepartmental service and communications. In Assembly, must be familiar with regulations affecting release ofmedical information and patient confidentiality and must use good judgment when responding to requests forinformation. In reception, receives numerous phone calls on a daily basis and must be able to make decisions on avariety of different requests for medical information while maintaining patient confidentiality. May assemble patientrecords and may prepare transcribed reports for distribution and placement in patient charts. May provide relief inother positions.

Principal Accountabilities

Clerical Responsibilities: Performs clerical functions related to ongoing department operations and the coordination of interdepartmental and intradepartmental service and communication.

Medical Record Chart Control: Pulls and files high volumes of patient records and documents.

Patient Chart Creation and Maintenance: Performs a variety of functions related to processing, maintenance and security of hospital patient health records.

Significant experience as a receptionist in a Health Information Management department preferred.



Qualifications:
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education, including Licensure/ Certification/ Registration
High school graduation or equivalent. Course work in Medical Terminology required. Completion of course work inHealth Information preferred.
Knowledge
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology required. Demonstrated knowledge of chart assembly and
background knowledge of chart analysis is desired. Thorough knowledge of dictation/transcription equipment andusage. Demonstrated knowledge of basic clerical duties and skills: typing, pulling records, filing, photocopying,answering telephones, faxing. Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications. Demonstrated knowledge ofessential elements for report formats. Demonstrated understanding of concurrent chart flow and patient types.Demonstrated understanding of patient flow from admit to discharge required. Knowledge of suspension process ispreferred. Knowledge of Birth Certificate process and transmittal process is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge ofrelease of confidential health information, terminal digit filing and basic office practices.
Experience
Two (2) years prior experience in an acute care medical setting. Significant office/reception experience in a healthcare related field required.
Skills
Requires organization, attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, decisive judgment and the ability to work withfrequent interruptions and minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a demanding, fast-paced environmentbalancing multiple priorities and take appropriate actions in challenging situations.
