Position Overview:

Job Summary:

The Assistant Dean of Students role will focus on student retention, success, and equity and inclusion by providing leadership and vision for University’s retention and success initiatives, including campus wide equity, inclusion and recognitions efforts with a particular focus establishing and sustaining structures to support student success and engagement that increases retention and engagement of our diverse student communities. This position leads the University’s Student Success initiative, engagement and retention efforts, and serves as a key resource within the Dean of Student’s office to address issues of inclusion and equity and contributes to a more equitable campus climate through policy consultation and capacity building for students.

The Assistant Dean leads the divisional partnerships with students, faculty, and staff in the development and implementation of student success initiatives, efforts focused on social justice and equity co-curricular activities and educational opportunities. This position serves to infuse principals of excellence to enhance our work with all SMU students acknowledging the particular experiences of our limited income, first generation, and historically marginalized populations. 

The Assistant Dean collaborates with Academic Program Leadership in the design, implementation and assessment of programs and support structures.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Design, lead, and assess the student success initiative as part of the larger success and retention efforts.
  • Serve as Dean of Students’ representative in the partnerships with academic departments and administrative offices to develop and deliver co-curricular programs and services that support the engagement, retention and graduation of students and contribute to the University’s Institutional Learning Outcomes.
  • Develop and implement policies, programming and educational opportunities that build capacity around student engagement, leadership, inclusion, equity and social justice and enhance student retention and sense of belonging
  • Assess the student success efforts broadly, analyze the results, and, along with best practices, lead the improvement of established outcomes and services
  • Partner with the office of Diversity and Inclusion on equity issues that impact student retention and success. Serve as a key resource concerning student retention and success for students, faculty and staff, and within the Division of Student Affairs. 
  • Manage administrative and budgetary matters related to the Dean of Students area
  • Participate in department and division meetings for project planning, policy development and direction setting
  • Design and provide resources that enhance students’ personal, academic, and social identity development with a comprehensive lens to the diverse student experience
  • Provide event support for campus-wide programs
  • Represent SMU and the Student Affairs Division in a variety of forums on campus and virtually
  • In partnership with academic departments, coordinate student career services efforts for the universityIn partnership with the Dean of Students, and other Assistant Deans, collaborate with key stakeholders to investigate and resolve problems, refer students for necessary services, including those in crisis, and consult on specific cases. 
  • Other duties as assigned or required


Qualifications:

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in student affairs, education, counseling or related field required
  • Experience creating and facilitating learning and engagement programs
  • Experience in leading divisional/institutional equity and inclusion efforts
  • Must be able to work independently
  • 5-6 years of related experience preferably in an academic environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to function in an atmosphere of changing priorities
  • Must exhibit tact, discretion, problem solving skills
  • Prior higher education management/leadership experience in student affairs or multicultural affairs
  • Maintain confidentiality

Knowledge of:

  • Student Development, Engagement, and Leadership Development theories
  • Social just training and diversity education
  • Retention and success methodologies and best practices
  • Budgeting
  • Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training
  • Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of university students
