In coordination with the VP of Communications and Public Relations, create innovative communication plans, strategies, and messaging that engage Sutter Health audiences in novel and compelling ways that inspire, influence and inform. Take a proactive research and Lean-based approach to developing and implementing internal communications plans and strategies for the assigned focus area that builds employee awareness, understanding and commitment to Sutter Health. Oversee the development and implementation of communication strategies and plans that advance Sutter Health’s culture, explain key focus area initiatives and foster an understanding of corporate strategies. On behalf of the Sutter Health Communications Department, manage the creation of innovative and integrated campaigns, activities and events employing a variety of channels and vehicles: interpersonal, town hall meetings, video, newsletter, social, print, podcasts, and digital. In partnership with the Creative Director, cultivate a “One Sutter” corporate identity through illustrative graphics, classic typography, engaging photos, inspirational videos and on-point messaging. Ensure the consistent and appropriate use of Sutter Health’s brand assets. As a key member of Communications, provide analytical support and guidance to multifunctional teams across assigned focus area and business initiatives to drive communication results that build awareness of Sutter Health’s advantages, while protecting and enhance Sutter Health’s reputation. Manage communications staff and oversee contract communication professionals, as required, to ensure aligned communications around strategic priorities. Continually evaluate communications plans and collateral to ensure the effectiveness of the content and distribution methods.
Qualifications

Education

  • BS in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations or related field is required.
  • Education plus significant relevant experience may be substituted.
  • Active membership in the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), American Marketing Association (AMA), International Association of Business Communicators (IBAC), or other similar peer organizations.

Experience

  • Seasoned professional with communications and public relations expertise as normally obtained during 8+ years of experience in progressively senior positions, preferably in a hospital, physician organization, health care system, communications agency or corporate communications department 
  • Substantial experience in oversight of complex communications strategies as well as reporting, writing and editing in corporate, journalism or agency setting is required 
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing the work of writers, editors, graphic designers, Web designers, audio/video producers and photographers is required 
  • Solid content development and management experience, including the ability to optimize all forms of communications to inspire, inform and influence internal audiences 
  • Established writing experience in focus area 
  • Proven experience is using marketing analytics to make informed communications decisions 
  • Solid background in project and change management with superb interpersonal skills that demonstrate success in managing through influence as well as solid-line reporting relationships 
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing, building and maintaining effective working relationships with executives, stakeholders and other key customers 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of strategic internal communications planning, social networking, graphic standards/corporate identity management, graphic design principles, news/feature/speech/online/script writing and editing techniques, publications development/production/management, principles of photography and audio/video production, audience list maintenance and special events coordination required 
  • Thorough knowledge of communications planning, graphic design and production, multi-media, graphic standards/corporate identity management, publications, Web site development and maintenance, special events, leadership presentations and research 
  • Current knowledge of regional, state and national health care and medicine issues, Northern California current events, and cultural and health care trends is preferred 
  • Strong business acumen and exceptional analytic skills with the proven ability to provide innovative communication solutions to complex problems and to meet business objectives 
  • Functional knowledge of selecting/hiring third-party talent for creative services, graphic design and production, publication development and management, market research and advertising 
  • Understanding of labor unions/labor relations desired 
  • Working understanding of and experience with Lean or other process improvement philosophies and methodologies desired

  • Professional writing and editing skills with the ability to interpret corporate goals and translate them into an effective communications/constituent relations plan

  • Strong organizational skills required, including demonstrated ability to maintain production schedules and strictly adhere to multiple timelines and budgets 
  • Proven ability to foster an interactive and collaborative environment, to influence individuals or groups with diverse opinions and to enlist cooperation without direct control/authority while building high performance teams committed to accomplishing initiatives in ecosystems that may be resistant to change 
  • Expert level skills in building cross-functional team and developing consensus 
  • Solid budget and finance skills, with the ability to negotiate effectively with staff, senior management, vendors, media partnerships, external agencies and organizations 
  • Competency in Microsoft Office suite, including working knowledge of graphic design, data management, and statistical analysis software
