Under general supervision, with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment, coordinates and performs a variety of clerical and routine administrative functions requiring an overall knowledge of procedures and day-to-day activities on a nursing unit; act as unit receptionist and primary point of contact for information on patient and unit activities; works closely with Nurse Manager, Nursing Supervisor, Charge Nurse and other unit staff, and coordinates as needed with various departments of the hospital. May be assigned to any category of nursing unit including medical/surgical, intensive or critical care, or behavioral health.
Supports patient satisfaction and service initiatives; Greets all visitors proactively and is the point of contact for information regarding all patient and unit activities. Answers telephones, nurse calls, processes inquiries and directs call to appropriate parties. Makes discharge appointments for patients.
Anticipates, evaluates and takes action as needed on various factors associated with physician's orders.
Coordinates patient transfers and discharges to / from / within the unit and communicates to appropriate parties. Assures timely documentation of transfer and discharges into the electronic system.
Tracks Hill-Rom Nurse Call badges and Vocera badges and other equipment as assigned. Enters assignments into electronic systems every shift.
Runs reports from electronic health record as directed by Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse and follows up as appropriate.
Maintains a clean and clutter free work environment. Assures that the unit is efficiently stocked and supplies are ready for the team.
Begins and maintains patient document folder throughout hospital admission. Scans appropriate documents into electronic health records during the course of the patient's stay.
Orders and ensures receipt of patient specific and unit supplies/equipment. Tracks biomedical equipment due for preventive maintenance and enters biomedical work order request into the web PM.
Checks and monitors patient and staff refrigerators including daily logging of temperatures and assuring that all food is labeled with name and date. Removes outdated foods daily and cleans and defrosts refrigerators monthly assigned to the unit.
High School diploma or equivalent
Knowledge of medical terminology
Related clerical experience
