Position Overview:

Sutter Medical Center Santa Rosa is located in the heart of Northern California's famous wine country, just 50 miles north of San Francisco and 30 minutes from the beautiful Pacific Coast. Providing quality health care services to the residents of Sonoma County for over 130 years, Sutter Medical Center Santa Rosa has 135 licensed beds and serves a population of more than 130,000 people. Centers of excellence include: Interventional Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Women's and Children's Services, and Level III NICU.

The Telemetry Technician Clinical Support Associate (TT/CSA) is trained in EKG interpretation and is responsible for continuous monitoring of all telemetry rhythms, mounting and interpreting rhythm strips, and interacting with nursing staff and physicians in rhythm identification and notification of deviations from baseline, initiating baseline data collection each event.

The Telemetry Technician/CSA enters and monitors telemetry specific orders with complete accuracy within the telemetry system in a timely manner.  Priorities work duties based upon own judgment and direction of the RN.  Practices discretion in maintaining patient confidentiality in both written and verbal form.  Acts as a resource person.  Telemetry Technician anticipates staff and patient needs and facilitiates communications to obtain needed supplies and/or support.  The Telemetry Technician represents the patient care team and department to the public and other hospital staff.  Demonstrates an understanding of and applies process principles in problem solving and promoting excellence.

The TT/CSA also performs clerical, electronic healthcare auditing and data retrieval, receptionist duties, managing multiple simultaneous requests from physicians, hospital personnel, nursing staff, patients and patient's families.  Assist in the coordination and prioritizing of department activities, in conjunction with nursing staff to assure smooth and efficient operation.

Under general direction performs clerical and basic patient support services and related work in a patient care or ancillary department for a variety of age specific groups.  The incumbent has access to Protected Health Information as needed to accomplish the accountabilities as outlined in this job description.  This includes access to the patient's medical record.

Has demonstrated competency in rhythm interpretation, use of monitoring system and ability to accurately monitor up to 50 patients at one time.



  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • The ability to speak English clearly, read, write and Mathematics are required.
  • Successful completion of EKG Course and/or testing within 3 months of hire.
  • Course work in medical terminology are strongly desired.
  • Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required within 60 days of hire into position.
  • The ability to speak and write Spanish fluently may be required for some positions.
  • Requires successful completion of course in cardiac monitoring and demonstrated competency.


  • Demonstrated experience in patient care services areas.


  • Must have valid CPR certification, completion of Telemetry class and demonstrated competency by passing EKG rhythm exam.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the heart's electrical system and ability to differentiate EKG rhythms accurately.

Working knowledge of medical terminology, Performance Improvement, Customer Service, Medi-Cal, Medicare and private pay insurance required.  Knowledge of basic patient care and interviewing techniques required.

Telemetry Technician/CSA I: Two years of experience that includes interviewing and/or public contact which required gathering personal and confidential information, utilization of medical terminology and experience in a clinical setting is desirable.

Telemetry Technician/CSA II: In addition to the requirements for TT/CSA I, a TT/CSA II is required to have worked minimum of one year (2,080 hours) as a CSA I at Sutter Santa Rosa required.  The incumbment must have demonstrated appropriate competencies and leadership skills in CSA I position.  Requires a telemetry certificate and competency.  After 5 years of service with at least 1,560 hours each year, Telemetry Technician/CSA I can apply for promotion to Telemetry Technician/CSA II.

Completion of management approval project must be done annually to maintain CSA II status.
