Position Overview:

The Security Officer has the general responsibility for the protection of personnel and property of California Pacific Medical Center accomplished through patrols and monitoring of the premises, observing and reporting suspicious and unauthorized activities and unsafe conditions.  The officer is responsible for access control, control of keys and emergency response and notification.  The officer renders assistance and security related services to the hospital staff, physicians, patients, and visitors, including monitoring and restraining violent patients.  The officer investigates and documents incidents relative to the Medical Center and provides necessary liaison between hospital staff and local law enforcement agencies.  The officer coordinates with other hospital staff for necessary services under their responsibility.


Communication Skills:

  • Possesses very good spoken English necessary to communicate clearly with others
  • Very good English grammar skills necessary to prepare documents worthy to be presented in civil and criminal court.
  • Officer greets others in a courteous manner in person and by telephone

Support Functions:

  • Under the direction of medical staff assists in physically restraining patients.
  • Provides necessary intervention to prevent visitors and other persons from disrupting patient care.
  • As called upon, watches (Stand-by) patients who have been determined to be a danger to themselves and others.  Preventing such patients from leaving the facility or injuring themselves or others.
  • Ensures that any disruptive or uncooperative patients being removed from the Emergency Department have been seen by a doctor and have been given their discharge instructions (EMTALA).
  • Officers may perform other duties as necessary to give assistance to staff and/or resolve any unforeseeable exigent condition that may not be covered by current policies and procedures.

Critical and Analytical Thinking:

  • Able to respond to various stressful situations in a calm manner and remains flexible while under stress
  • Identifies problems and considers all possible solutions, considers what resources are needed for a successful solution.
  • Officer is able to appropriately prioritize service calls and emergencies on severity, time and needs.
  • Appropriately screens persons entering the property for exposure to contagious diseases and exposure to hazardous materials.  Acts to prevent exposure to staff and other persons.

Documentation and Investigations:

  • Understands the processes for investigating various incidents; gathers required information about the event, environment, identifies all persons involved and identifies possible causes that resulted in the event.
  • Responds in to all events in a timely manner, pauses to evaluate situation and possible need for assistance within the department and/or the police, fire and/or medical assistance.
  • Protects the event environment as much as is required to conduct a thorough investigation and allow medical personnel in to assist any injured parties.
  • Identifies safety hazards and takes appropriate corrective action, notifying responsible personnel for follow up.

Customer Service:

  • Initiates contact with customers who need assistance rather than waiting to be asked.
  • Promotes an attitude for providing superior customer service.
  • Takes initiative on any issue of customer discontent or incident that should be addressed promptly
  • Knowledgeable of all hospital campuses so as to give directions and respond to calls.

Medical Center Policies and Procedures:

  • Adheres to all Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Practices safe work habits and engages in good business standard and conduct.
  • Arrives early enough to prepare for each shift and is in proper uniform at the start of shift.
  • Takes time to review recent events and reports.
  • Consistently enforces policy and procedures; i.e., parking, smoking, employee ID.

Training and Education:

  • Attends all department meetings
  • Participates in Healthcare Defensive Training sessions
  • Participates in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training
  • Completes all scheduled Health Stream training modules as scheduled.

Additional Requirements: PM or weekend shift required by schedule



  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education required
  • Associate's degree preferred
  • Security, military, or law enforcement experience, or any management level experience is desired.

Licensures and Certifications:

  • Driver's license, valid and in-state - DL number required
  • California Guard card required


  • Possesses basic knowledge of searching suspects and using personal restraint devices
  • Officer is knowledgeable of the laws concerning citizen arrests, detainment and effecting lawful and necessary arrests.
  • Has very good computer and typing skills, is proficient with Windows, Work and Excel software.
  • Able to operate vehicles with manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Able to operate two-way radios and is knowledgeable with common ten-codes and phonetic alphabet.
