Position Overview:
Job Summary:
  • The RD, Diabetes Clinical Specialist is a professional dietician who possess advanced knowledge and clinical skills in the specialty area of diabetes.
  • Functions independently while counseling complex patients and works collaboratively with the diabetes service team in developing and implementing quality diabetes education program for patients through assessment, education, interventional goals and counseling.
  • Responsible for providing clinical expertise in specialty and functions as an education clinician and consultant.
  • Provides interactive group and individual instruction in diabetes self-management training (DSMT) principles specific to all areas of clinical expertise, meeting American Diabetes Association and American Association of Diabetes Educators standards of care.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of projects/programs and data collection.
  • Provides clinical expertise and collaborates with community and hospital providers regarding best practices in diabetes treatment and transition of care.
  • Works with complex and often challenging patient situations. Is able to individualize care, effectively establishing priorities and following up to assure that goals are met.
  • Supervises and delegates appropriate tasks to other Diabetes Center staff, mentees and volunteers to meet patient's needs.
  • Acts as mentor to dietary students, mentees and new staff.
  • Independently applies judgment to resolve and/or refers complaints or issues as appropriate.
  • Participates in hospital-wide projects and initiatives.


Qualifications:
Education, Licensures, and Certifications: 
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics Required
  • Master's Degree in Nutrition Preferred
  • Registered Dietitian - Required
  • Current Diabetes Education Certification or a minimum of 1000 hours of documented work – Required upon hire
  • Certified Diabetes Educator – CDE or mentee hours in direct diabetes education training – Required within 1 Year
Experience:
  • Minimum of two years’ experience as a Registered Dietician and in-depth knowledge of clinical practice for area (s) of assigned responsibility is required.
  • Must have prior experience demonstrating the ability to work with minimal supervision with strong organizational and project development skills is required.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of principles of adult learning and the ability to adapt teaching style to a varied audience required.
  • Experience in blood glucose monitoring and insulin pump training desirable
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Competency in using various glucose monitoring and insulin delivery.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and teaching skills.
  • Independently practices and prioritizes multiple demands.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Must be able to use electronic health record (EPIC) for efficient and accurate documentation, Microsoft
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook calendar.
  • The ability to effectively coordinate efforts with others, including interdisciplinary groups, without direct line of authority.
  • Self-motivated and proven ability to work both independently and effectively as a team member with a variety of healthcare specialists.
  • Excellent critical thinking and clinical expertise.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of concepts of educational needs assessment, planning, curriculum development, training implementation and evaluation of training required.
