Sutter Health has a long and successful history of training laboratory professionals. Our laboratories are approved by the State of California for two specialty license programs in Transfusion Medicine and Microbiology.

These programs will prepare you for California licensure as a Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist or Clinical Microbiology Scientist – a highly qualified, specialist lab professional.  Join our knowledgeable and passionate team at Sutter Health where you can develop your career to meet your professional goals.

Students will be expected to participate in didactic lectures through the year. Program Overview

Our one-year training programs emphasize bench work and practical applications of laboratory medicine. These internships are full time paid opportunities which include generous medical benefits. Eligibility

Must meet all requirements set forth by the California Department of Public Health, State of California (Cal. Admin. Code Title 17, s1033), and Sutter Health, to include:
  • BS/BA degree or higher in Biology or an equivalent major
  • At least 25 semester or 38 quarter units in applicable coursework, varies by program
  • GPA of 2.8 or higher
  • Applicants with foreign baccalaureate degrees must have a foreign transcript evaluation by an approved evaluating agency
  • Be a US citizen or permanent resident
  • Live in, or have close ties to, an area served by a Sutter Health Laboratory
  • Have a valid Trainee License issued by the State of California prior to the program start date

Application Process

Submit a completed application packet and accompanying documents to Sutter Health, via email or mail.

1. Application packet
  • Application form for IHS Program or CMS Program
  • Current resume
  • Letter of intent – a one or two page statement describing your career goals, personal experiences that led you to these goals, and experiences you feel will ensure your success as a student in this program.

2. Three letters of recommendation from science instructors or employers

3. Official, sealed college transcripts
 
Selection for admission into our training programs is a competitive process and will be based on merit, without discrimination for reasons such as race, color, gender, religion, politics, age, handicap etc.

Program Dates

All application documents for the upcoming training year must be submitted by April 30, 2024. Interviews and selection process will occur in May. Students will begin training on approximately August 5, 2024.
